On
the southwestern corner of the Rhode Island is Westerly, a community with
New England charm. Westerly borders Connecticut where it shares its downtown
area with Pawcatuck. It was the fifth town incorporated in the Rhode Island
colony back in 1669. With the other towns in Rhode Island on the eastern
side of the colony, Westerly was considered the frontier town. The town
would grow in the 1800's with the introduction of the granite industry.
Quarries in the Westerly and Bradford areas would bring more people from
across the Atlantic. |
Westerly
is probably best known for its beaches on the southern coast. In the summer
months, people come to places like Watch Hill, Misquamicut, and Weekapaug
to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the beaches are open between Memorial
Day and Labor Day. Throughout the year, groups like the Greater Westerly
Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce offer numerous events and parades. People
can also enjoy the splendor of Wilcox Park behind the Public Library. |
